Why this one is the case study

Personal branding is now a ranking mechanism, not a vanity project

For fifteen years the goal of SEO was a position on one page of one search engine. That is no longer where the decision happens. A buyer asks an assistant for a shortlist, and the assistant answers with names — sometimes without a single click reaching anybody's site.

Which means the thing being ranked has changed. It is not a URL any more, it is an entity: a person or a company that a model can identify with confidence and is therefore willing to name. That is why personal branding stopped being a soft marketing activity and became a technical prerequisite.

The strongest version of this proof is not “our page ranks first”. It is “the AI wrote our name into its own answer” — because that happens only when the model is confident enough about a person to attribute a recommendation to them.

SEOTamil.com is where that was tested. Tamil-language SEO education is a real market with real competition, thin and unreliable keyword data, and no way to buy your way in. It is also owned outright, so every number here can be published without a client's sign-off, and the screenshots below are the raw platform interfaces rather than a slide about them.

The target was not a keyword. It was the phrase people use for a person: SEO Tamil, Tamil SEO expert, best Tamil SEO expert. Ranking a page for those is straightforward. Getting a language model to say the name unprompted is the part that required the work described below.

Search Everywhere Optimization

One entity, seven surfaces, four inputs

“Search everywhere optimization” gets used as a slogan. Underneath it is a specific and fairly boring mechanism, which is the good news: it is buildable.

Search Everywhere Optimization, as a mechanism

The same four inputs feed every surface. That is the whole argument: you do not run a separate campaign for AI answers, you make one entity unambiguous and it shows up in more places. The status on the right is what this case study can actually prove — not what it would be convenient to claim.

What you optimise

Entity clarity

One person, one site, one topic — stated the same way in schema, copy and every off-site profile.

Extractable claims

Definitions written as short, quotable blocks near the top of the page, so a model can lift them intact.

A credentialed author

A named human with verifiable qualifications attached, not an anonymous brand byline.

Citation sources

Presence on the directories, videos and profiles the models already quote when they answer.

One entity

+ Alston Antony

A 26-page site and a named author, reconciled into a single thing a search engine or a language model can be confident about.

The constraints

Three things that made this harder than an English site

Each one changed a decision. None of them is unique to Tamil — they are the same class of problem as a SaaS product in a category with no search volume yet.

01

The keyword data is unreliable

Search volume for Tamil queries is sparse and frequently wrong. Planning this from a volume export would have produced the wrong page list, so the architecture was built from observed SERPs and real query strings instead.

02

The audience code-switches mid-sentence

Tamil learners write “SEO” in English inside a Tamil sentence, and search both ways. A page that commits to one script loses half the demand, so every core page carries the Tamil term, the English term and the transliteration.

03

The traffic is desktop-heavy for the region

36% of clicks come from desktop, well above the 14–20% these projects normally see. That is people studying, not scrolling — which justified long, structured, reference-length pages rather than short mobile posts.

What was actually built

Six decisions, and the reason behind each one

There is no growth hack in this list. It is a small site built correctly, which is usually what a category term costs.

01

26 pages, not 260

One page per primary term, sized to be the best answer for it. No volume play, no thin variations. The whole property is 26 URLs, and 596 queries currently sit on page one.

02

Split by intent, not by topic

Course, tools and expert pages are separate URLs because they answer different jobs. /expert/ carries the commercial intent; the homepage carries the learning intent. Merging them would have cost both.

03

Bilingual on the same URL

Tamil script, English technical terms and transliterations coexist on one page, matching how the audience actually types. That is also why the site ranks for both “seo tamil” and “seo குறிப்புகள் தமிழ்”.

04

A named author, everywhere

Educational queries are trust queries. Alston Antony is the visible author with credentials attached, which is what lets an AI Overview name a person rather than just link a domain.

05

One system, two formats

The Tamil YouTube channel and the written pages cover the same cluster and cross-link. In the “seo tamil” AI Overview, the site and a video both appear as cited sources.

06

Answer-shaped, extractable copy

Definitions sit in short, quotable blocks near the top of each page. That is why /seo-course-tamil/ alone earned 120 Copilot citations — it is structured to be lifted.

Why the average position says 6.8

Search Console reports a 16-month average across every query a site ranks for, including the whole climb and a long tail of near-misses. It is a diagnostic, not a ranking. The live SERP is the ranking, which is why both are on this page — and why the distribution below matters more than either single number.

/digital-marketing-tamil/ 78 0 0.00% 4.09

Every one of these averages a better position on Bing than on Google, on roughly 2% of the impression volume. Bing is a smaller audience that is easier to lead — and it is the engine behind Copilot, which is why it is worth the attention it rarely gets.

The distribution is the lesson. /seo-course-tamil/ earns 120 citations while pulling only 7 organic clicks. By classic SEO reporting it is a weak page. By AI visibility it is the second most valuable asset on the site, because it is structured as a reference a model can quote rather than an article a human must read.

That gap is the single most useful thing in this case study. A page can be doing its most valuable work in a channel your rankings report does not contain.

Coverage, stated honestly

What is proven here, and what is not

“Ranking everywhere” is easy to say. Below is each surface with the specific finding and the specific evidence — including the two surfaces this study does not measure.

YouTube Not audited The Tamil channel feeds the same topic cluster and is cited alongside the site in AI Overviews, but its ranking is not measured in this study. Out of scope

On ChatGPT, Gemini and YouTube

Those surfaces are part of the same entity strategy and the same work feeds them, but neither ChatGPT nor Gemini publishes a per-answer citation export, and a sampled prompt screenshot is not the same standard of proof as a platform report. So this page does not claim them. If a case study shows you an assistant screenshot with no methodology beside it, ask how many prompts were tried first.

Why a Tamil site is in a SaaS SEO portfolio

The mechanism transfers; only the vocabulary changes

The obvious objection: what does Tamil-language SEO education have to do with B2B software? Everything, because none of what produced this result was language-specific.

Getting named in an AI answer required a clear entity, a credentialed author, claims structured to be extracted, and presence on the sources the models already trust. Swap “SEO Tamil” for “best CRM for agencies” and the checklist is identical — the same comparison-shaped pages, the same schema, the same author signals, the same citation seeding on review sites and directories.

What Tamil offered was a market where the whole loop could be run and measured on an owned asset, at a speed no client engagement allows, with permission to publish every number afterwards.

It also produced the finding we now check first on every SaaS audit: the page earning the most AI citations is frequently not the page earning the most clicks. On this property that gap was 120 citations against 7 clicks. On a SaaS site it is usually the docs, the integration pages, or a pricing explainer nobody was reporting on.

Who did this work

One practitioner, start to finish

Alston Antony, the SEO practitioner behind SEOTamil.com

Alston Antony

Sole author & operator

Every page on SEOTamil.com was researched, written, published and measured by Alston Antony — no writing team, no outsourced link building, no agency between the decision and the result. That is deliberate: it is the only way the data can be published in full.

He has worked in search since 2010, holds an MSc in Computer Software Engineering (Distinction) from the University of Greenwich, and is a professional member of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. In his day role he is Senior Digital Marketing Manager at Brainstorm Force, whose software powers 7M+ sites, where he grew ZipWP organic clicks 74% from a zero baseline. He has taught over 30,000 students and published 617 videos.

How to verify every number on this page

  1. Totals and averages come from Google Search Console for seotamil.com, Search type: Web, the 16-month window ending 12 August 2026. The screenshots show the property, filter and window in the interface.
  2. Position bands were recomputed here from the raw 968-row query export, not taken from a summary. Thresholds are stated on the chart, because Search Console reports position as a decimal average, so “#1” has to be defined — we used below 1.5.
  3. Site totals versus query totals. Google anonymises rare queries, so the query export sums to fewer clicks than the site. The site figure of 1,374 comes from the Devices export, which is complete.
  4. AI citations come from the Bing Webmaster Tools AI page citation report, exported 12 August 2026. Google's figure is impressions inside generative features, a different metric, and the two are never added together.
  5. Rankings are the live SERP at capture time, in an unpersonalised session. Rankings move; the screenshots are dated so you can re-check them.
  6. The site is live. Open seotamil.com and search the terms yourself. That is the point of using an owned property.

Case study FAQ

The questions this raises

What is Search Everywhere Optimization?

Search Everywhere Optimization is optimising for every surface where someone can search, not just Google's blue links: Google organic, AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and YouTube. The work overlaps heavily with classic SEO — crawlability, entity clarity, structured data, authority — but the measurement changes, because being cited without a click is now a real outcome.

Does SEOTamil.com actually rank #1 for “SEO Tamil”?

Yes, in the live SERP. The screenshots on this page, captured 12 August 2026, show seotamil.com as the #1 organic result for both “seo tamil” and “best seo tamil”, and as a cited source in the AI Overview for both. Search Console reports a 16-month average position of 5.66 for that query, which is lower because the average includes the whole climb, not just the current position.

Why does the site average position 6.8 if it ranks #1?

Because Search Console averages every query across the entire window. The property has 968 ranking queries; 110 of them average position #1 and 222 average the top 3, while a long tail of experimental and near-miss queries sits well below. A single site-wide average number is a diagnostic, never a ranking claim — which is exactly why this page shows the distribution instead.

Why does a Tamil SEO site prove anything about SaaS SEO?

Because the mechanism is identical. Getting named inside an AI Overview depends on entity clarity, extractable claim structure, a credentialed author and citations on sources the model already trusts. None of that is language-specific or industry-specific. Tamil was simply a market where the result could be earned quickly and measured cleanly, which makes it a better proof than a client case study under NDA.

What does “336 Bing Copilot citations” mean?

Bing Webmaster Tools reports how often each page is quoted inside a Copilot or Bing AI answer. Across 9 distinct pages on seotamil.com, that total is 336 — with the homepage at 130 and the Tamil SEO course page at 120. It is a direct measure of AI visibility, and it is one of the few surfaces that publishes it per page.

Is this an agency client project?

No, and that is the point. SEOTamil.com is owned and operated by Alston Antony, so every decision, mistake and result is his — nothing is anonymised and nothing needs client approval to publish. The full data exports and platform screenshots are on this page for you to check.
